Jonesboro – Eugene Thurman “Gene” Hopkins, 93, passed away Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at St. Bernards Medical Center.
He was born January 6, 1916 in Augusta to the late Milton and Annie Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins retired after thirty-five years with as Pepsi Cola as a route salesman. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Jonesboro, NEA Senior Citizens Group, avid gardener, beekeeper loved woodworking, fishing.
He treated everyone the way he wanted to be treated. He was from the greatest generation, came up through the depression, knew how to survive and make something out of nothing. He was a people person and always had a song in his heart and never met a stranger. Mr. Hopkins was a man of honesty, integrity and faithful as a husband, daddy and to his church.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Thurman E. and Carolyn Hopkins of Pine Bluff and Kenneth and Sue Hopkins of Hattiesburg, Miss.; three daughters, Norma and Gerome Boyd of Cash, Carolyn Sue and Buddy Shivley of Elba, Al. and Linda Porter of Pine Bluff; ten grandchildren, Kevin Hopkins of Maumelle, Keith Hopkins of White Hall, Becky Miller of Hattiesburg, Diana Greenhall of Keystone Heights, FL, Sharon Hopkins of Mobile, AL, Paul Boyd of Bella Vista, Natalie Ward of Brookland, Anna Council of Knoxville, TN, Sarah Robbins of Marrietta, GA and Ashley Winkler of Pine Bluff and seventeen great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lou Hopkins; six brothers, Marion Hopkins, Edgar Hopkins, Lloyd Hopkins, Milton Hopkins, Charles Hopkins and Tom Hopkins; a son-in-law, Michael G. Porter.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 1.00 P.M. at the First Assembly of God on Stone Street in Jonesboro with Rev. Ken Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 5, 2009, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Gregg Funeral Home in Jonesboro.
Honored to serve as pallbearers, Jeffery Winkler, Eddie Miller, Kevin Hopkins, Keith Hopkins, Buddy Shivley and Glenn McManners and as honorary pallbearers the Pacesetters Sunday School Class.
